• previous answer is wrong. It is possible to use it as a phone and wifi internet. You only need a data plan if there are no hotspots

• It would be great if we could just buy a phone and just use it without paying someone a monthly fee. But this is the real world, of course you have to have a data plan. DUH!!!!!!
