• I don't know how Verizon works but all I had to do was put my T-Mobile SIM card in before turning the phone on.

• If the phone is unlocked and you pay in full, there should be no upgrade fee. In regards to it working on Verizon. Most unlocked devices will work unless they're from over seas and GSM only.
