Yes. You’ll still need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and a modem to connect to the internet. Google Wifi replaces your traditional router to provide seamless, reliable Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home. Internet speed and reception depend on the modem and internet service provided by ISP. Google Wifi can help distribute the full speed it receives from your modem. Learn more about Google Wifi here: https://support.google.com/wifi/answer/7168315

Typically speaking, your ISP will leave you with what's called a "gateway" which is a modem and router in one box. If you're looking into a mesh wifi system or any new router, you'll need to figure out if you want to keep your old modem, or get a new modem as well. The benefit to getting your own is you no longer pay rental fees on the equipment provided by your ISP. The downside is they don't really support other modems. Now to answer your question regarding the speed, generally speaking YES this will improve the speeds. The technology in these units is great and it will blanket your house with wifi and in my installations/support of clients that use these (as well as my own personal use) The speeds I get on the other side of the house are the same as what I would get if I was right next to the modem. I highly suggest!
