This is an excellent choice for a young action videographer. It is durable and it takes great video. The model that you choose depends on how you intend to use it. If your son is just going to mount it on his skateboard, bike, or helmet, then there is no need for the LCD to help frame the shots. You can get the less expensive Hero+. If he doesn't have an iPad, iPod, iPhone or Android device to control it via WiFi or Bluetooth, then you can get the base model Hero. That's the real difference between the Hero, Hero+, and Hero+LCD. There are other difference in the base Hero like the slow motion setting is only available at lower resolution and it also takes lower resolution stills and lower bit rate video. So the Hero is more limited shooting and no Wifi or Bluetooth and the Hero+ and Hero+LCD take higher quality video and stills and only differ in the LCD. If he is going to use it as a hand-held camera I would definitely get the Hero+LCD.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This one might be easier for him to use since it has the LCD screen so it shows you what the buttons do instead of clicking them and trying to figure it out.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I bought this for my 15 yo and it turned out to be a great choice. If he is a little interested in gadgets I think he will take advantages of this model's features versus the lower end models.

He will get older and he will get used to the cheaper version, and you run the risk of being asked for a newer version at age 13 or 14. you might as well purchase this now and have it last 2-5 years. You will be entitled to use it too because it can fun and handy.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Kids today require as many features that manufactures can dream up. Unless he is a movie maker. These are only the equivalent to fun snap shots to share with friends and family.
