• Yes, GoPro cameras can be used in fresh or saltwater. If used in saltwater, it's always a good idea to rinse the camera off with freshwater after each use.

• Yes you can. However, I would advise using the protective case. If you don't you will need to make sure you wash with clean non-salt water to really protect it. I've used the Hero 8 and 9 in salt water before without the plastic waterproof case and they did fine but I found the door for the battery and SD card gets a little sticky and tough to open. Since I've used the case I don't have that problem. Also, if you are going to drop it in the water with a long selfie stick to get underwater shots from a boat and the boat is moving at an idle speed the water gets forced into the speaker area and can cause damage to the camera.
