No. The carafe side brews until its reservoir is empty.

I fill the carafe with the amount of water suitable for the number of cups of coffee we're going to drink and pour that into the main reserve. Once the carafe is out of water, it stops and your 6 or 10 cups of coffee are ready. I make 6 cups in the carafe most of the time without a problem. The clear reservoir on the K-cup side is the part you want to keep full with water so you can make single cups whenever you want but the carafe side can be empty until you get ready to use it.
