• The device comes with a DVR plan that you can pay for (not required). However, you can choose to use your own DVR option that does not cost anything. I personally use Plex. I am unfamiliar with Tivo, but if Tivo does not require a monthly service, then you wouldn't pay a monthly bill.

• I use Plex for my NAS to record. I paid 75 for lifetime membership and Plex takes care of storage and schedule Home run also has a service
