How is the sound quality? null

It's fine for my small space. I suppose in a bigger room, you might want a sound bar to enhance the sound.

The background noise, the hum was intolerable for me.

I'd say it's average for a modern tv. This is, good enough to watch the local news, but you'll want speakers for movies. I hooked up an old 2:1 speaker system from a computer system and it sounds great.
