• No, the TV does not require an external device for streaming apps.

• The TV I purchased (50H6C) has smart capability built in. However, it only has certain streaming apps. Those are Netflix, Amazon & VUDU. Not sure if it has HULU too or not.

• The built-in streamer works great. Keep in mind that there are limited offerings in 4k presently. Netflix has some 4k content, mainly their original programs. YouTube has some neat 4k videos. I don't subscribe to Amazon or Hulu so I don't know how much 4k content they offer. However, where 4k is available, it looks great on this TV using the TV's built-in hardware. They'll be a lot more 4k, even 8k, down the road.
