“Does the built in Chromecast stream in 4k or is that something an external unit would be needed for?”

• The built in Chromecast is not a 4K capable I don't think. I don't ever use it since I already had a Chromecast Ultra.

Yes,chromecast has the capabilities, however the device and the app will also need to be 4K which the TV can stream in 4K resolution while a 4K title is being casted to the screen using the built-in Chromecast.
