It requires the Google Home app for set up, but after that it basically works on its own.

This device requires a connection to a Google account. So the initial setup requires a connection to the Google Home app to link the Google Home device to a Google account. After the device is linked to the account. The device doesn't need to be synced with the app to use the device. It is just for linking the device to the account.

Depends what you mean. This just connects to wifi (no Bluetooth) and can play music and do limited functions. However, if you have things like Samsung smartthings then you get more features to play with. Other than an internet connection, there is no other required devices.

No - you just plug it in and off it goes. You have to have Wifi of course...it's truly easy and doesn't sync with anything. If you want it to respond to things like your NEST or HUE lights - you have to download the apps that let Google Home work with them...but that's it. Have fun - we love ours!
