The features Google is working on now seem to all be on the software and search/database side, so it shouldn't need new hardware to do it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.There is no way to tell for sure, and most certainly will be newer versions of the Home in the future, but Google could make many improvements to the home in the background just as Amazon has done with the Echo.

There may be occasion when a major update requires the user to download and install using the app. For the most part it will update itself with new features as they are added. You should not have to buy a new device.
