Hey, no, all you need is Wifi for it to work (and a device that can run the Home app to set it up, which can be found on the Google Play (Android) and the App Store (iOS). It works off Google's very own, built-in "Assistant," so you don't need a SmartTV for it to work either- but if you have a Chromecast or Google Cast enabled SmartTV, it can control your television- playing movies, shows, music and more by using your voice.

This will eventually allow you to use voice commands to cast to your TV, but this feature isn't ready yet. If your SmartTV will already accept chromecasts you should be fine I imagine.

It operates my smart lights, smart door lock, and answers all sorts of questions. Also, google will be making updates all the time to operate new devices.
