What is exactly this device is for,? null

It allows you to control some devices like the Nest and Philips Hues with voice. Also allows you to play music without your phone and work with Assistant.

You're supposed to be able to speak basic commands to it, and it will either provide info to you relating to your command or question, or it will automate certain processes in your home. Examples of commands include "Set a timer for 10 minutes" or "Tell me a joke". Processes include raising or lowering the temperature in your house if you have a smart thermostat, or dimming/turning off your lights if you have smart light bulbs and switches. If you don't buy those things for your home, Google Home is essentially a little cylinder that sits on a shelf and can search Google for you, add an item to your shopping list, tell you how long it will take to get somewhere, or play some music. Right now, that's about the extent of its real functionality.
