It sometimes gets confused the first few times like when I had my pixel phone near Google Home and they both tried to answer but after a few tries they chose a default, normally the home device. If you have google assistant on your phone it will normally say on the screen that it's responding on another device. If I want to have my phone answer, I'll press the mute button on the Home device. A word of caution about alarms: If you say to set an alarm and the home device responds, it only sounds the alarm on the home device so if you won't be sleeping in that room make sure the alarm is set on your phone.
