It's Artificial intelligence. You can ask it to play music, tell you a joke, give you a recipe or set a timer. You activate by saying OK Google or hey Google then lights light up on top and you ask it a question or give it a command. Highly suggest watch a YouTube video on Google Home Commands. This device is constantly learning and so will you.

You can ask it questions, like what the weather is and todays headlines as you're getting ready for the day. If you have a music account, you can ask it to play music and it will use a playlist catered to what you've told them you like in the past. If you have chromecasts, you can cast music or youtube videos to them. If you have home automation devices, you can control compatible ones. I use it to control my lights, check the weather and control my entertainment center.
