If I'm not mistaken you can simply rinse the filter occasionally to extend it's use. Should not have to replace that often.

If you are seeing build up and discoloration appear faster on the filters, that is due to increased minerals/sediment in your water that the filter is absorbing. Discoloration is normal, and the filter will still work with some discoloration.
