The system uses the average temperature across sensors to control heating and cooling. You can mount the sensor anywhere in range of the thermostat, but the system will consider that sensor as just another room. The thermostats control algorithm is designed for sensors to be located only in rooms or areas that are part of the heating/cooling system. If you don't want the outside temperature to affect the thermostat's calculation of average temperature, you'll need to prioritize the sensors that you do want to be included in the calculation.
