• There are five levels of height adjustments on the machine. The suction is very powerful and raising the level reduces the suction so the machine moves a bit easier.

• Hard floors pls 3 carpet settings. When I'm on the high carpet level it does give a little more resistance and I have to push harder, but it does a great job.

• 4 carpet settings and 1 hard top floor setting.

• Lower two settings and is hard to push (even though one is the recommended setting in the manual for my type of carpet). Raised to the mid setting and is easier and still pulls most of the dirt & pet hair out of the carpet).

• I don't know, but to do a Persian rug, I had to use position #3, so extrapolating that out, I can't see it doing too high a pile.
