“You really can't use Excel . Word, etc., with this ? My Sons school offers these for free as a download. I need to know for sure if there is no way to download them. I am well aware of Google Docs, but dont want that to be the only option.”

This is a Chromebook, so you won't be able to download MS Office software on it.
