• Hi Sue. Yes! The HP 17-cp3005dx has an HDMI port for connecting an external monitor.

• Yup. That's why they include an HDMI port. No, it's not just for show.

• P.S.: You might also be able to cast the screen to an outside monitor, although I haven't tried this myself, so cannot be sure.
