“Office 365 I believe costs money. I was wondering if it is possible to use the office apps like Word and Powerpoint for free. I've been using google docs/slides but a class I'm taking requires office not google and I do not want to spend the money.”

Sure (sort of). Stick with Google and you'll be able to: - read any Office 365 doc (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) you're sent or download, and - save any file you create on Google to Word, Excel, or Powerpoint before sending/uploading it
