“Why do these monitors not connect with a VGA? I bought a brand new VGA cable in addition to 2 monitors. My laptop connects to the monitors independently with HDMI, but when I try and do a dual monitor + laptop setup using the VGA, I get no signal.”

Without knowing what model your computer is it's difficult to do more than guess, but if it will run two monitors but not all three, my first hunch would be to look at video system of the computer and see the maximum resolution it will support. It may be incapible of driving three monitors at the same time.
