You will need to connect the monitor to the laptop via the appropriate display-based cable (most common one is HDMI), and make sure the monitor is plugged into a source of power (wall outlet). From the laptop, you would go into your display settings and "extend" the screen display to the monitor, and adjust configuration as need be.
