The black ink cartridges are 'photo' black and 'standard' black. The photo black ink is more expensive and is intended for the black areas of photographs. Standard black is used for text and simple images.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You save money buy and time by purchasing two cartridges, opposed to one. Or you can purchase a larger ink cartridge. I prefer to purchase the larger, rather than two. It is a personal preference. I recommend you purchase them at Best Buy, they do have the best prices.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. When printing photos Photo Black is used, instead of the standard black used in text. In explaining why, it is useful to understand how our color and standard black cartridges differ. HP standard black cartridges and color cartridges are very different. Our standard black cartridges are designed for very dark laser like text. Color cartridges however, have a different composition and have much greater fade resistance as a result. HP’s “better” photo printers use a separate Photo Black cartridge. Photo Black has black ink that uses the same composition used it our color cartridges. It is in essence a black “color” cartridge. This results in higher quality photos with longer fade resistance.
