If I'm not mistaken, the XL denotes a high yield cartridge.

Here are the page yields for each cartridge: HP 61 black: ~190 pages HP 61 color: ~165 pages HP 61XL black: ~480 pages HP 61 XL color: ~330 pages I hope this helps!
