Most of the printers make you have both of the ink cartridges in order for it to be used. Even if you mostly use black and white it sometimes uses the colored one if certain things are darker black. I know it seems stupid I've thought the same thing.

For printing only in black, you can invoke single-cartridge mode by removing the tri-color cartridge. The printer control panel or computer screen might display a message to install the missing cartridge. To clear the message and continue with the print job, click or press OK.
