“I only print in black and white, never color. I always use the draft setting to use the least amount of ink. Why am I always having to replace my color ink cartridges due to “low ink” notification when I never print in color? I have an HP Envy 4520.”

Most of the printers make you have both of the ink cartridges in order for it to be used. Even if you mostly use black and white it sometimes uses the colored one if certain things are darker black. I know it seems stupid I've thought the same thing.

For printing only in black, you can invoke single-cartridge mode by removing the tri-color cartridge. The printer control panel or computer screen might display a message to install the missing cartridge. To clear the message and continue with the print job, click or press OK.
