No it will work with just black ink and low colors

I have a trick. The printer will not work if you leave the slots empty. It will not work if the cartridges are empty. So, here is my trick... I leave the empty cartridges in there, but I cover their sensor window with black tape. It tricks the machine to believe that the cartridges are full. Always works!!!
