Actually no. You can simply replace the black and print in black. My printer from HP tells me to replace the colors or press OK to print in Black

Please try again later.I feel you on what you said about you only print in BLACK PRINT but you have to buy the Color Cartages or you will not be able to print anything on your HP Printer, I am faced with that same problem, The solution is to junk your HP Printer and when you purchase your next Printer make sure that you do not have to purchase Color Ink as well as the Black Ink in order to print in black only. If you find on please post it here so I may find it as well, HP Color Ink is way to expensive to print thing in black print.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I use a HP8720 printer and it uses 3 different colors and a black. Each cartridge can be changed separately. My printer tells me when a cartridge is getting low. The reason 3 colors are offered in a single pack is that most often the colors last about the same and buying a 3 pack saves money over buying separately. Black is normally sold separately and come in standard and XL sizes.

There is a symbol for ink shown in a small window on the printer. Clicking the ink drop symbol next shows levels for each color cartridge, including black. You only replace the one that needs it. By the way, you may get a message a particular ink cartridge is low; keep using it! Usually you can do a lot more printing before the ink actually runs out!
