I would say it's meant for a 15" laptop. My 15" macbook pro fit with some leftover space, but probably not enough room to fit a 17" laptop.

I use it for my iPad it is 12inchs and has a case it has about 4 extra inches in length and could hold something thicker. And the front zipper can hold a mouse and pad plus any cords.
