While we’ve not had a problem with excess toner consumption and haven’t run out of any color yet to test the operation with a low-color situation, I will say that it uses yellow toner even on B&W printing. Most people are unaware that ALL printers are required by law to lay down a pattern in yellow that identifies the printer that printed a page. Ink jet or color laser alike. This is to discourage counterfeiting. This is also likely why printers stop working when there is a missing color.

If you're using genuine HP cartridges, the ink cartridges will run until they're dry. For the toner that this printer. it comes with a black cartridge that will print about 600 pages, while the three color cartridges will print about 500 pages. When it comes time to replace the cartridges. the black that you'll buy will print 1300 or 3200 pages, depending on whether you get the standard or the extended fill cartridge. For each of the colors, they'll print either 1200 or 2500 pages. again depending on whether you get the standard cartridges or not.
