• Good question. There is no difference between the printers except the model number. The 3831 is carried by certain retailers and the 3830 is carried by certain retailers. I hope this helps.

• From my searching there is a 3831 which doesn't have the fax option. The Officejet 3830/3831 have the fax option. The Officejet 3830 is black and the 3831 is white. If you want the fax just check the functions of the printer during your search.
