the printer does about 4 to 10 pages per cartridge set. the program runs in the background and counts the pages you print to estimate when your ink tanks are likely to be low. ONLY GET THIS PRINTER IF YOU GET THE INSTANT INK PLAN. it uses up the ink really quickly and is only worth getting with an ink plan.

Ink usage will vary based on the content of your prints. If you print only photos, you will use the cartridge much more quickly than someone printing only receipts. All ink cartridges have an ISO page rating, which is based on 5% page coverage, per color. This is the best way to compare one cartridge to another. In the case of Instant Ink, the cartridges sent are very large capacity, and will print many pages. This will still vary, depending on content, but will always be a better deal than buying ink cartridges for the same printing. Pages print with Instant Ink are the same cost regardless of the content of the page. HP gets the ink remaining and pages printed information from your printer. These two pieces of information allow HP to understand your ink use, and send you cartridges in a timely manner.
