The flip door is for inserting a document(s) you want to copy/scan/fax. Rather then lifting the top and putting your document on the glass you can flip the smaller door up, place your document(s) FACE UP in the tray and hit copy/scan/fax. This will automatically feed each document onto the glass, copy/scan/fax it and deliver it back to the tray on the right underneath the flipped open door. Its useful when you want to copy/scan/fax multiple pages. It saves you the work of continuously lifting the entire top panel to place and remove each page you want to copy/scan/fax
