• Hello and thank you for asking. The 4-cartridge design of the HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e separates the printheads from the ink cartridges and integrates the printheads with the printer. Printing without at least some ink in all the cartridges runs the risk of damaging the printheads. If that occurs, the printer will not be able to print and will have to be replaced. That is why the printer will not print if any of the 4 ink cartridges are empty.
