I do not see a protective layer on my 27QS. It does appear to have a matte finish to reduce glare which might be what you're seeing.

Thank you for reaching out. There is no additional packaging once you remove the monitor from the foam sleeve. This monitor has an anti-glare coating (matte, not reflective) with a brightness of 400 nits and is Eyesafe® Certified; HP Eye Ease. You can change brightness/contrast settings through the monitor controls or through the software.
