• For me it’s great on all surfaces, even the couch when I don’t feel like using the touch pad on my laptop.

• I do not use a mousepad. It seems to work decent on my table and the board I use when I'm sitting on the couch.

• You can use an optical mouse on a variety of different surface areas as long as it is not overly glossy or reflective like glass. The Vector is not any different in that sense. A mouse pad can just tends to be more effective and protects the surface, of the mouse and desk, from the constant rubbing.
