“Can I hook up a game controller using USB C connection instead of regular USB ports? There are 2 USB C ports on the back of the computer I would like to know if I can use one of these for an Xbox Controller and the other for an external HD. Thanks!”

Yes you can. You can also use one of the USB-C connectors to connect to a dock or port replicator to give you more ports.
