Sorry but, I'm confused with this too. I bought a new monitor and I can't get any sound from my speakers because they don't have the HDMI required pug-in.
They are old so I figure sometime I'll buy new ones. Seems every time you buy one thing it requires you to buy something else?????????????? I hope you can get a sensible answer to your question.

If the new monitor, or your existing monitor, has a VGA connection, it would be preferable to use the VGA ports on the computer. If not, a USB to HDMI adapter would be necessary.
