It sounds like you have not been purchasing an inkjet designed for your print volume. With a model like the Envy 5055 it is designed for very low volume printing. The full set of ink, black and color is just over $25 and would only need replaced about every 6 months or so (always leave a printer turned on, the ink will last longer). It would take a lot of ink cartridges in the 5055 to equal the cost of a color laser printer (around $400) and the toner cartridges (about $100 each, theres 4 of them). Also, our new inkjet printers have Instant Ink. A model like the 5055 or 5255 is eligible for print free for life. This means if you print 15 pages or less per month you never pay for ink, it comes to your house free anytime you need it. If you ever need to print more than 15 pages then it is only $1 for every 10 pages. Laser printers are great but they are primarily for a high volume user who would be printing around 4000 pages every 6 months or more. But to answer your question, toner does not dry out.
