It depends on what type of jack your laptop has. If it has a single TRRS jack, you would use the 3.5mm jack by itself. If it has separate microphone and speaker jacks, you would use the splitter.

The shorter cord has the ability to plug into a laptop (combined input/output); the longer cord extends the shorter cord and splits the mic/headphone jacks.
