“I started up a game for the first time and it was extremely laggy, its a new pc but the monitor is an older hp monitor... could the monitor be the reason the games so laggy? It lags on the lowest quality, sorry if its a stupid question.”

Yeah so it’s going to be laggy with an older display monitor. You’re going to want to purchase one that can run anywhere from 60-144hz!

Also the 1060 gtx in these systems only has 3 gigs of dram, it should handle most games at medium-high settings though. I bought 2 of these systems for my girlfriend and i, we have 27' freesync samsung panels though and have had no real issues.
