I bought one yesterday and its making this crackling noise when the iPhone is docked just like you are describing. Have you figured out the cause and were you able to resolve it?
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Perhaps it’s not seated properly on the dock or you need to clean the charger and port. If not exchange for a new one because I have not had the issue (yet)

Please try again later.We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing a malfunction, please follow these steps to reset the unit Make sure you are not using a protective case. If you are using a protective case please try docking the device without the case. 1. Remove the batteries from the unit if applicable. 2. Unplug the unit from its power source (AC adapter). 3. Wait 20 minutes. 4. Plug the unit into a power source (without batteries). 5. Hard Reset the (iPad, iPod, iPhone). If normal operation is restored, insert "new" batteries into the unit.
