“had about a month. lately I noticed the hdmo side going in to the monitor is getting very hot and my display changes from 4k to something else. If I unplug and let cool down then plug back in it works. Is there something wrong with my cable? Is it normal”

Cables like these often have components inside that will change the signal - it's possible that you may have a defective cable experiencing overheating issues and it should be replaced.
