This unit draws 90 watts, or 1.5 amps. If you use a GOOD 14 or 16 gauge SHORT (10 foot or less) extension cord you should be O.K. 
Just remember this unit runs most of the time, and small cords like lamp extension cords WILL heat up!
A safer alternative might be to put nicely covered blocks (bricks?) to raise the unit up, this will also increase cooling!

I have this plugged into a high quality surge protector because there was no other option. The surge protector is rated for 2100 watts, etc, etc. It's working great. So...you can make it work.

I have mine plugged into a large Electric extension strip and it works just fine. I don't think I'd worry about not plugging it directly into the wall

You can use an extension. Just make sure it's not too long and that it supports the wattage so it doesn't get hot.
