“Can these speakers be connected to a receiver without a pre-out? Wouldn’t connecting them directly to the receiver speaker outputs fry the amp in the Insignias? Would connecting the Insignias to the receiver’s tape monitor out (a line output) work?”

Tape out should work, as RCA is RCA so you could connect CD player, a VCR, etc, but volume levels will vary. Be sure to test at low volume on receiver and speakers in case it is noisy and can damage the speakers
