“Once i plug in for initial use how long before the temperature can be adjusted. currently 50 degree lights for a few seconds and goes out but when displayed i can't adjust the temperature”

Have you tried holding the lock button until it beeps? Iirc they come “locked” so you have to unlock to set initial temp.
