most refrigerators have a large opening in the back where the compressor/motor are housed. and while it creates a large area for air to enter and the heat to dissipate, it is also best to allow air to move under the fridge as well. I would suggest if you want to place it on a carpeted area, that you put down a piece of plywood or some other flat surface that doesn't need to extend around as the same size of the fridge, but will allow the feet to sit on to raise up off the carpet.
