I think that it's great that you are asking this question as a lot of people who may be interested in purchasing this Insignia 40" TV model NS-40D420NA18 might have similar concerns due to space limitations or because they might want to secure an understanding if this TV is big enough to fulfill their needs. What follows is my attempt to best answer your questions. From left to right, the "outside" width of this television set's chassis is 35-1/4". Although you did not ask, I will offer that the outside width of this television set's feet (at their widest) is 30-1/2". I have two (2) measurements to offer regarding your question concerning the top-to-bottom dimensions of this set. If you choose to attach the "feet" to this television set, the "total" height would be 22-1/8". If you wanted to do a "wall mount" of this television set (i.e., where you would choose "not" to attach the feet), the total height would be 20-1/4". These are all precise measurements and I hope that my attempt to assist you will be of some help as this particular Insignia 40" TV model has a lot to offer.
