If I run multi-channel audio via HDMI into the TV and then connect the TV to my receiver via the optical digital output, will "legacy" 5.1 audio (lower bitrate Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1) pass thru? That would be REALLY convenient if so!”

Yes, it will pass thru nicely since you run optical cable.

Please try again later.If your devices are connected with HDMI cables and sending over a 5.1 signal, then yes, the TV is able to pass those though via the digital optical connection. You may need to go into the TV menu and change the digital output to RAW, which means the TV will pass through the incoming audio signal without processing it.
